Voluntary Muscular-Corticol Effort (VMCE) involves the increase and decrease of muscular tension with slow deliberation within the body . Analogous to that of an accordion , this somatic tool created by Stanley Keleman , explores how anatomical organizations in the body are made up of pulsatory waves on a micro scale . By slowing the compound action down into smaller frames , intervention can now take place to edit behavioral patterns which were once unconscious and lived out repeatedly. Below is an example quoted by Stanley with Shrink Rap Radio in 2002. he describes talking into smaller frames.
“Talking is fundamentally a muscular act. Talking involves how you breath through agitate or oscillate the laryngeal muscles. You are sending up sound waves , and sound waves that are sequenced in a particular way in which people understand muscular movements of the larynx as a form of communication.”
Let us combine the basic pelvic floor exercise with VMCE. A scale of 0 - 10 will be used just as one would climb up and down the rungs of a ladder in steps. Start with bigger step differences first , as you acquire finer motor control , you could progress to more difficult variations which involve subtler shades in between the steps and longer hold times. As always , breath smooth as you lift those imaginary cherries.
Individually connect clockwise and anti-clockwise with the 4 quadrants with a slow contraction of 6 seconds each.
With the pie warm and ready , bring all parts to step 5 as a baseline , increase to 7 -> 10. Hold 10 seconds in between step .
Climb down the ladder and up again. 10 -> 8 -> 5 -> 6 -> 7 -> 8 -> 4 -> 0 . Wait for 30 seconds at the bottom and pay attention to yourself without the thinking function.
A challenging variation goes like this . 10 -> 9 -> 8 -> 8.5 -> 8 -> 7 -> 7.5 etc
During the exercise , It is not uncommon for the pelvic hold to start slipping even if your intention is set on a certain step. For clients new to the bar , i get them to crush my index and middle fingers with both hands but even with gritted teeth and red faced , the grip is weak. That is their maximum capability relative to where they are in their journey. The mind can wander or sometimes it is just one of those days that the body isnt fully in sync. Its okay , be honest enough to be kind to yourself.
This exercise is empowering for those who unknowingly live their day to day life with the pelvic floor excessively tight and lifted. You could now differentiate the levels of structure , learning to self-influence and undo as needed. Beyond the context of this article , the opposite is a possibility , granting permission to be walked over by deflating and collapsing the body.
